A 19-year-old man, Omar Majed from Birmingham, faced court on Monday after being charged in connection with an alleged bomb hoax responsible for evacuating a Peter Kay show. During the hearing at Birmingham magistrates’ court, Majed showed disruptive behavior and was eventually removed from the courtroom. He did not enter a plea to the charge of communicating false information to the police and was remanded in custody.
The incident occurred at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, where Majed reportedly forced his way into the venue without a ticket on Friday. He allegedly told a police officer and others that a bomb might be present at the arena, prompting the evacuation of nearly 13,000 attendees. Prosecutor Ros Buttler highlighted the serious consequences the hoax had on the large-scale event.
Inside the courtroom, District Judge Michelle Smith repeatedly instructed Majed to remain quiet and seated after he caused disturbances. When Majed objected to proposed bail conditions, describing them as “not acceptable,” he was sent to the cells before the hearing concluded. His next court appearance is scheduled for 1 June at Birmingham Crown Court.
During the event, Kay was taken off stage about 45 minutes into his performance as part of his national “Better Late Than Never” tour. Following searches of the arena, West Midlands Police confirmed that no suspicious items were found
