French authorities have reported the deaths of two women attempting to cross the English Channel by boat from France. The vessel, carrying a total of 82 individuals, ran aground on a northern French beach early Sunday morning.
According to Christophe Marx, secretary-general of the Pas-de-Calais prefecture, the deceased women, approximately 20 years old and believed to be of Sundanese origin, were discovered inside the boat. In addition to the fatalities, three passengers sustained serious injuries, while 14 others were moderately hurt in the incident.
The Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event. A spokesperson for the UK Home Office expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, stating, “Every death in the Channel is a tragedy and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people for profit.” The Home Office also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with French authorities and international partners to prevent such dangerous crossings.
Recent data shows that 597 migrants have arrived in the UK over the past week via six small boats. To counter the ongoing attempts, an agreement has been made for riot-trained police to be deployed on French beaches. France is also investing millions in surveillance technology, including drones, helicopters, and advanced camera systems, to detect and intercept people smugglers and unauthorized crossings. Over the last three years, the number of migrants crossing the Channel has risen sharply, with 41,472 arrivals recorded in 2025 alone. The Home Office emphasized its efforts by highlighting that since the election, more than 42,000 illegal crossings have been prevented, and nearly 60,000 individuals residing unlawfully in the UK have been removed or deported. They also stated the intention to intensify measures to discourage illegal migration and increase enforcement actions
