King Charles visits Bermuda in first British overseas territory trip

Thousands gathered in Bermuda to welcome King Charles III with a ceremonial reception marking his first visit to the British overseas territory as reigning monarch. Arriving in Hamilton on Thursday evening, the King came alone, following a four-day state visit to the United States. This trip represented a significant change from his recent, highly publicized diplomatic engagement in the US, which was regarded as the most important event of his reign thus far.

Though this is Charles’s initial visit to Bermuda as king, he had previously been on the island in 1970 to participate in the opening of its parliament and toured parts of the territory in an open-top vehicle. On Friday, the royal visit featured a formal inspection of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, a unit associated with the British Army. The King also met and shook hands with warmly welcoming crowds lining the streets of St George, the former capital. The occasion included a military procession accompanied by a marching band, culminating in a traditional 21-gun salute to honor the monarch’s arrival.

Visitors of all ages brought Union Jacks and captured moments with the King, including a memorable interaction with four-year-old Theo. Dressed in a King’s Guardsman outfit, Theo caught the sovereign’s eye, and interestingly, even his teddy bear was outfitted in the same attire. Theo’s mother explained that the outfit was purchased at Buckingham Palace two years ago and joked that her son “has worn it ever since!”

Later in his visit, King Charles traveled to Trunk Island to visit The Living Classroom, an educational program aimed at teaching young people about Bermuda’s unique ecosystem. During this stop, staff from the Bermuda Zoological Society conducted a health check on a local bird species known as the Bermuda Longtail or white-tailed tropic bird. The King also participated in a ceremonial cake-cutting to mark the centenary of the island’s aquarium museum, an institution celebrated by the local community.

Throughout the week-long tour, King Charles was generally met with warmth and respect, even receiving playful remarks from US President Donald Trump about the late Queen Elizabeth II’s impression of the monarch. However, some concerns had arisen prior to the visit due to recent political tensions between the UK and the US, especially as President Trump had publicly criticized the British Prime Minister for the UK’s stance regarding conflicts involving America and Israel. The King’s speech before the US Congress, which received a standing ovation, indirectly addressed these strained relationships.
