The suspect in the recent Golders Green attack, Essa Suleiman, who was born in Somalia but moved to the UK as a child and holds British citizenship, remains in custody. Police have indicated that he was previously referred to the Prevent program, the country’s counter-terrorism initiative, although his case was closed in 2020. Additionally, officers suspect he may have been involved in an earlier incident in southeast London. Security experts from the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre independently recommended raising the threat level, underscoring an alert status just below the highest level of “critical.”
Senior officials, including Security Minister Dan Jarvis, have urged the public to remain alert but not alarmed, reassuring that intelligence agencies and law enforcement are actively working to protect communities. London Mayor described plans to increase police presence, including armed officers, to safeguard the city’s residents and visitors. The recent rise in threat level additionally reflects concerns about violence motivated or encouraged by foreign entities, although no direct foreign links have yet been established in the latest attack.
In response to escalating incidents targeting Jewish communities, the government announced an additional £25 million in funding to bolster security around synagogues, schools, and community centres.
