Welsh Labour leader Morgan says 'vote Plaid Cymru' in speech slip-up

Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan made an unexpected slip during a campaign event when she mistakenly urged Labour supporters to cast their vote for Plaid Cymru. The incident occurred at a gathering in Barry Island, Vale of Glamorgan, just ahead of the upcoming Senedd election. Initially, Morgan encouraged the audience to back Welsh Labour, but as she switched to speaking Welsh, she inadvertently said “pleidleisiwch Plaid Cymru,” which translates to “vote Plaid Cymru.”

Realizing the error, Morgan promptly corrected herself by clarifying that she meant “Plaid Llafur,” the Welsh term for the Labour Party. After the event, she addressed the mistake in an interview with ITV Wales, explaining, “We’re all a little bit exhausted, once you switch into Welsh the word ‘Cymru’ comes off your lips.” She reiterated her commitment to the Labour cause with the statement, “Obviously I’m very, very keen for people to vote Welsh Labour in this election.”

The gaffe took place during the launch of a policy document outlining the projected costs of some of Labour’s initiatives if the party remained in government following the election scheduled for 7 May. The audience responded to her slip with laughter and applause, displaying a lighthearted reaction to the mix-up.

In a later interview with the BBC, Morgan dismissed suggestions that her campaign was faltering, emphasizing the importance of experienced leadership amid current challenges. She stated, “Now is not the time to take a risk when people’s bills are going up, when people are really up against it.” Highlighting Labour’s long tenure, she warned against placing inexperienced individuals in charge, saying, “I think that is a huge risk at a time when what people need is stability, they need to know there will be jobs there for the future.” Despite Labour’s 27 years in power in Wales, recent polls have shown the party trailing behind Plaid Cymru and Reform UK in the Senedd election race
