Police declare terrorist incident after two Jewish men stabbed in London

Two Jewish men were attacked by stabbing in Golders Green, north London, in an incident that police have classified as terrorism. The victims, aged 76 and 34, were given treatment at the scene and have since been taken to hospital where their condition is stable, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Authorities apprehended a 45-year-old British man of Somali origin at the scene after deploying a Taser. He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. The suspect reportedly tried to attack responding officers with a knife but no law enforcement personnel were harmed during the confrontation. Video footage circulating on social media shows officers approaching the suspect before using a Taser, with a physical struggle ensuing as they attempted to disarm him. Police confirmed the suspect resisted arrest and kept posing a threat during detention.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley praised the bravery of the officers, noting they were not armed and feared the individual might have explosives. He also mentioned the suspect’s past history of serious violence and mental health challenges. Investigations are continuing, including a search at a property in south-east London where the same suspect is believed to have been involved in an earlier altercation resulting in minor injuries to another person.

Senior officials condemned the attack with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labeling it an “antisemitic attack” and “utterly appalling.” He emphasized that assaults on Jewish communities are assaults on the country itself. The Prime Minister chaired an emergency cabinet meeting following the incident and pledged to consider enhancing security and increasing protective funding for Jewish communities. Various political leaders, including London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and opposition figures, expressed their outrage and called for stronger measures to combat antisemitism amid a series of recent violent incidents targeting Jewish people across the UK
