Prince William visits RAF Valley in Anglessey for 85th anniversary

The Prince of Wales recently revisited RAF Valley in Anglesey to commemorate the air base’s 85th anniversary, sharing heartfelt reflections on his time there. Wearing the RAF military pattern camouflage uniform, William expressed to the trainees how much he had enjoyed his service at the base, underscoring the strong positive memories he associates with the place. His visit highlighted a personal connection, dating back to when he served as an RAF search and rescue pilot based at Holyhead from 2010 to 2013.

During his military tenure, William and the Princess of Wales, who are approaching their 15th wedding anniversary, lived together in Anglesey as newlyweds. Speaking candidly to the trainees, he said, “I loved my time up here. It was great fun… I do miss it. I miss the job, I miss the camaraderie.” This sentiment resonated as he engaged with current servicemen and women, meeting former colleagues such as pilot instructor Brian Wills and chief maritime instructor Andy Batchelor, with whom he discussed maintaining his flying skills.

Brian Wills recalled William’s enthusiasm, remarking, “In a heartbeat, he said he’d come back and do it again.” Andy Batchelor praised William’s character and piloting abilities, saying, “He’s a great guy, friendly, easy to get on with, a very competent pilot. He was very easy to work with. He just wanted to be Will – he was just one of the team.” Batchelor also noted the significance of William’s return for the anniversary, emphasizing his credibility stemming from having lived and served in north Wales.

As part of the celebrations, William, who holds the title of Royal Honorary Air Commodore, observed a parade and presented the Prince of Wales Award, which recognizes the best qualified flying instructor annually. He also took the opportunity to engage with women stationed at the base, discussing their experiences within the military. Addressing some concerns, he reflected, “Some things have come to my attention that I’m not particularly happy about. Are we adopting and evolving the armed forces in a way that is suiting women joining the forces and is it a nice place to join?” Officers shared with him their challenges, including balancing military careers with motherhood, underscoring ongoing conversations about inclusivity in the armed forces
