Gary McKee, a long-time fundraiser from Cleator Moor in Cumbria, has described completing 100 marathons in as many days as a “pretty special” achievement. This incredible endurance challenge concluded on Sunday at the London Marathon, where he crossed the finish line hand-in-hand with his 18-year-old son, Beau. The father and son duo were cheered on as they completed the final leg of a journey that has drawn admiration from many.
Known locally as the “marathon man,” McKee’s efforts have earned him considerable recognition, including an MBE awarded in the King’s 2026 New Year Honours. Over the course of his challenge, he successfully raised over £70,000 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria, a local charity dedicated to providing compassionate care. Despite the relentless heat during the marathon, McKee found the moment of crossing the finish line both powerful and emotional, particularly as he held Beau’s hand with the other raised in celebration.
During the event, McKee shared that the public’s encouragement was uplifting. “When I was out on the course, people were tapping us on the shoulder saying how inspirational we were,” he told BBC Radio Cumbria. He also mentioned a brief but meaningful interaction with Sir Mo Farah at the start line, who acknowledged the magnitude of McKee’s achievement by saying, “Mate, what you’re doing is incredible.” Beau has been a regular companion throughout the challenge, joining his father each day for part of the 26.2-mile route since the challenge began in January.
Hayley McKay, representing the hospice charity, emphasized that the impact of McKee’s commitment extends beyond financial support. She traveled to London to witness the final marathon and described the atmosphere as overwhelmingly emotional. “That first time we saw them and they saw us, they were punching the air and they were smiling,” she recalled.
