A 16-year-old teenager named Albert claimed victory in the 2026 Maldon Mud Race, overcoming a large field of determined participants. This annual event challenges runners as they traverse a muddy 440-meter stretch across the River Blackwater. Despite having no prior preparation, Albert completed the course first in the main public race, impressing spectators and fellow competitors alike.
The race began at 14:30 BST under sunny skies, with runners navigating the thick, chilly mud—water temperature was estimated at around 8°C. Albert, visibly exhausted yet triumphant, described the experience as “very good, but very hard” and expressed surprise at his own success. “I never thought I’d win,” he admitted, acknowledging, “None at all, absolutely nothing” when asked about his preparation. He added, “My legs are burning, but my head is very happy… I don’t know how I did it… I’ll be coming back next year.”
Albert’s father, Danny Crates—a Paralympic athlete and world record holder in the 800m—praised his son’s remarkable performance. He highlighted that being the youngest competitor and potentially setting a record time made the achievement even more special. “He’s put me to shame. I’d still be out there now if I’d run it,” he remarked with pride.
Following the main race, the event hosted its first-ever elite category at 15:30, designed for the super-fit athletes. John Matthews, who decided to participate only a week before, emerged as the winner. Reflecting on the challenge, Matthews shared with the BBC, “It was much harder than I thought it would be, near enough impossible. You have to pull your legs out with your hands, it was near enough a full body workout.” Confident despite the short notice, he jokingly noted, “I couldn’t lose to an Olympian,” referring to boxer Lewis Richardson, another elite race participant.
