The BBC has revealed that DJ Sara Cox will take over as the host of Radio 2’s breakfast show, starting this summer. Cox, who hails from Bolton, currently presents the station’s teatime programme, a role she has held since 2019. She expressed her excitement about moving into the flagship slot, describing the opportunity as a “dream” and feeling that it represents a “full circle” moment in her career.
At 51 years old, Cox shared her gratitude for the past seven years on the teatime show and thanked her listeners, many of whom she hopes will follow her to the new breakfast slot. She promised “excellent music and all my usual nonsense plus some superstar guests” and said she “can’t wait to wake the nation up with the biggest most fun breakfast show ever.” The BBC has yet to announce who will succeed her in the teatime position.

She has also been a frequent stand-in for the breakfast show during Chris Evans’s time and previously led the Radio 1 breakfast show in the early 2000s.
The transition comes following the departure of Scott Mills, who was removed from the breakfast slot in late March after new information emerged connected to a police investigation into alleged historic sexual offences. Mills had been under investigation between 2016 and 2019 regarding allegations from the late 1990s to 2000 but was not charged due to insufficient evidence. Although Mills cooperated fully with the police and the investigation was closed seven years ago, the BBC decided to dismiss him after fresh details surfaced recently. Mills released a statement acknowledging his dismissal but chose not to comment further on the allegations, asking for privacy on the matter
