Why this weekend’s London Marathon will impact more than just knees

Pickerill has personally witnessed the challenges faced by children undergoing cancer treatment and their families, often visiting hospital wards dressed as a Disney princess to bring comfort and joy to children during difficult times. She emphasizes the importance of providing children with some sense of normalcy and escape during their treatment journeys.

Children with Cancer UK highlights that around 10 children in the UK are diagnosed with cancer every day, with two of them not surviving. Of the survivors, many suffer lasting physical and cognitive side effects from harsh treatments like chemotherapy, which are typically designed for adults, not still-developing children.

Despite improved survival rates due to advances in research and treatment, only about 2% of cancer research funding is directed towards childhood cancers. The charity is also active in raising awareness and support, including large participation in events like the London Marathon.
