Harry and Meghan meet Bondi attack survivors

During the fourth day of their visit to Australia, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex engaged with survivors and emergency responders connected to the tragic Bondi Beach shooting. The incident, which occurred in December during a Hanukkah event, resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals and left 40 others injured. At Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club in Sydney, the royal couple met volunteer lifeguards and community figures who had firsthand experience with the attack.

Among those the couple spoke with were Jessica Chapnik Khan and Elon Zizer, both survivors of the shooting who heroically shielded their children during the event. The volunteer lifeguards, widely recognized for their brave efforts in protecting the public during the crisis, also had the opportunity to meet Prince Harry and Meghan. Additionally, representatives from the Sydney Jewish Museum attended the gathering, noting the couple’s visit as a meaningful gesture in light of an upcoming exhibition dedicated to the attack.

Following their time at Bondi, the Duke and Duchess were greeted by crowds at the steps of the Sydney Opera House. After this warm reception, they boarded a boat for a sailing event organized by Invictus Australia. Prince Harry has a long-standing connection with the Invictus Games, having announced in 2018 that Australia would serve as the host country during his previous royal tour. The games, founded by Harry in 2014, are a sporting event designed for wounded military veterans.

This trip marked the couple’s first visit to Australia since their 2018 royal tour. Now no longer working members of the royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan undertook this journey in a private capacity, continuing to maintain their connection to causes and communities that resonate with them personally
