A man has confessed to unlawfully retaining his mother’s body, which was found stored inside a chest freezer at their residence. The discovery was made by South Wales Police officers in February at a property on Poplar Crescent in Porthcawl.
Court proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court revealed that the deceased, 89-year-old Sylvia Phillips, passed away at some point during 2023. Her son, Christopher Phillips, aged 60, admitted charges of preventing a lawful and dignified burial. In addition, he pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud for not notifying the Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend council about his mother’s death.
The body came to light after a welfare check was requested by Sylvia’s general practitioner. During the inquest held earlier this week, a pathologist reported being unable to determine the exact cause of death, and investigations are still ongoing.
