DARC space radar should stop because of Trump – Welsh first minister

Welsh Labour leader and First Minister Eluned Morgan has called on the UK government to halt its collaboration with the United States regarding the development of a deep space radar station. This appeal comes amid her criticism of former US President Donald Trump, whom she accused of displaying “contempt for our country.” The radar project, set to include 27 radar dishes at Cawdor Barracks in Brawdy, Pembrokeshire, is part of an international initiative involving the UK, US, and Australia to track objects orbiting Earth.

Morgan’s position has stirred tensions within political circles, as she urged her Labour colleagues in Westminster to reconsider the plans. The radar station site lies within the Ceredigion Penfro constituency, where Morgan is the lead Labour candidate in the upcoming Senedd election on 7 May. Her stance has sparked concern locally; the Labour MP for the area expressed worries that Morgan’s opposition might jeopardize the economic benefits promised by the scheme, including job creation.

Opposition parties have also weighed in on the controversy. Plaid Cymru accused Morgan of making a “last ditch attempt” to retain her seat, while Reform UK claimed she was diverting attention away from Labour’s record in government. A spokesperson for Plaid Cymru highlighted that Morgan had previously remained silent on defence and international matters and only voiced opposition to the project after polling indicated a potential loss.

The Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) programme aims to refurbish the airfield at Cawdor Barracks to host the UK’s main role in the project, extending the base’s operational life beyond its initially planned closure in 2028. Local campaigners have opposed the initiative, despite the Ministry of Defence’s assurances that it would bring employment and skills development opportunities to the area. Meanwhile, supporters, including local MPs and the UK government, maintain that DARC is crucial for national security and economic growth
