Met Police officers charged over death of pregnant woman in crash

In south-east London, a tragic accident involving two Metropolitan Police officers has led to charges following the death of a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child. The incident occurred on 17 October 2024 on the A20 near Kidbrooke Park, resulting in the loss of the woman’s unborn child at the scene and her subsequent passing in hospital.

PC Chris Johnson, aged 38, faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving. Former PC Danny Tomkins has been charged with dangerous driving. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) carried out an investigation that concluded in October 2023 before the charges were brought forward. Johnson was driving the unmarked police vehicle that collided with the woman’s car, while Tomkins’ charge relates to his driving conduct in a second vehicle involved in the incident.

Both officers are scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May 2024. The IOPC statement highlighted that Tomkins’ charge concerns his alleged manner of driving, distinguishing it from Johnson’s direct involvement as the driver of the vehicle responsible for the collision.

Acting Detective Chief Superintendent James Derham expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident.” Derham also emphasized the complexity of the IOPC’s investigation, noting the necessity of refraining from comments that might prejudice upcoming court proceedings
