David Parrish, a 35-year-old ultra-marathon champion from Dumfries, tragically passed away while running in the Highlands. Parrish was attempting to break the record for the fastest completion of the Cape Wrath Trail, a grueling 234-mile (376 km) route stretching from Fort William to Cape Wrath. The experienced runner and former Royal Marine was discovered in the remote mountainous region of Kintail, located in the north-west Highlands, on Saturday evening.
Police Scotland reported that Parrish was found at approximately 22:25, confirming there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and that his next of kin had been informed. Known for his endurance and dedication, Parrish had claimed victory in the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023, despite only running competitively for a few years. The trail itself traverses some of the UK’s most challenging terrain, including areas such as Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon.
For this most recent endeavor, Parrish was not only pursuing a record but also raising funds for Scottish Mountain Rescue to honour his close friend, Luke Ireland. On his fundraising page, Parrish acknowledged the vital role of mountain rescue volunteers, noting their constant readiness “365 days a year to respond to emergencies in the mountains and remote areas of Scotland.” The campaign attracted significant attention and raised thousands of pounds, alongside numerous tributes to Parrish’s memory.
Parrish was a respected member of the Dumfries Running Club and had been its club champion in 2022. He began running in his late teens and gradually progressed to competitive racing in his early twenties, participating in local 5km and 10km events. After joining the Royal Marines, he described running as a way to decompress from the stresses of his military duties. Following his service, Parrish continued to engage with running through Parkruns and completed a walk along the Cape Wrath Trail in 2021. Photographs from the 2023 Cape Wrath race capture his joyful spirit and athletic prowess, with No Limits Photography’s Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux remembering him as “such a joyful person and an inspirational ultra marathon athlete,” lamenting that “the world and the sport will be a far lesser place without him.”
