A 23-year-old university student has been charged with the murder of his housemate, who succumbed to multiple stab wounds in north Bristol. Zack Coughlan was taken into custody on Sunday following the death of 21-year-old Jamie Collins. The victim was discovered in the rear garden of the shared house where both men lived, located on Cleve Road in Filton.
Jamie Collins, who was studying robotics at the University of the West of England, was found in the early hours of April 9 after emergency services responded to the scene. Both Collins and Coughlan were students at the same university. After his brief appearance at Bristol Magistrates’ Court, during which he confirmed only his personal details, Coughlan was refused bail and remanded in custody in preparation for his next court hearing at Bristol Crown Court.
Authorities identified the suspect by examining CCTV footage, collecting forensic evidence, and conducting thorough searches of the surrounding area. Police investigators believe the victim had been dead for several hours prior to being found. Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth of the Major Crime Investigation Team expressed condolences to Collins’ family, noting that specially trained officers are providing support and keeping them informed about the ongoing investigation. She also requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.
Efforts to provide reassurance to the local community have included increased police patrols around Cleve Road and cooperation with the University of the West of England to support students and staff affected by the tragedy. The university described Collins as an active member of student groups and emphasized their shock at the circumstances surrounding his death.
