Man admits trying to kill police officer with stolen car in Edinburgh

A man has admitted to attempting to murder a police officer using a stolen vehicle that unknowingly contained a teenage passenger. The court heard that Thomas Malone, aged 29, was involved in the incident at a Shell petrol station located on Stenhouse Road in Edinburgh on 9 July 2024.

Malone had taken a silver Mercedes Benz without permission from outside a burger shop on Gorgie Road, with the owner having left the car briefly to buy food. Unaware that the man’s 16-year-old son was sitting in the back seat watching videos on his phone, Malone drove away with the teenager inside. At the High Court in Edinburgh, prosecutor Nicola Gilchrist relayed that the passenger challenged Malone and told him to stop, to which Malone responded, “We are going for a drive,” before driving off. He released the teenager shortly afterward, who was found distressed and in shock.

Throughout the event, Malone drove recklessly through Edinburgh, frequently swerving into opposite lanes and once nearly colliding with a bus. He also struck another vehicle during this dangerous driving. Witnesses noted the stolen car was fishtailing, losing rear wheel traction and veering uncontrollably. Observers also reported significant damage to the front of the Mercedes, including a crumpled bonnet. PC Adam Brealey, encountering the vehicle at the petrol station, attempted to intervene by parking his police BMW to prevent Malone from escaping. When Brealey tried to apprehend Malone, he grabbed his hands but Malone resisted and refused to turn off the engine.

Prosecutor Gilchrist described how PC Brealey activated his emergency radio as Malone reversed the car, leading to a collision with a vehicle at the pump. Brealey was caught leaning into the driver’s window during the maneuvers and was struck by another vehicle before falling to the ground. Despite these collisions, Malone continued, hitting a pole near the exit before fleeing on foot. He was pursued by both police officers and a member of the public and was apprehended nearby. PC Brealey was later treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and discharged after receiving care for his injuries.

Malone, who is from Edinburgh, entered guilty pleas to charges including attempted murder, dangerous driving, and abduction. Sentencing is scheduled to take place at the High Court in Edinburgh on 12 May. Meanwhile, Lord Renucci ordered that a specialist social worker prepare a report on Malone’s background and remanded him in custody pending sentencing
