A prominent government advisor is set to sharply criticize the UK’s leadership for what he describes as a dangerously complacent attitude towards national defense, warning that the country’s security is at significant risk. This condemnation comes from Lord George Robertson, former NATO secretary general and author of the UK government’s Strategic Defence Review (SDR). In a speech scheduled for Tuesday, Lord Robertson will accuse officials, particularly “non-military experts in the Treasury,” of undermining defence efforts, labeling their actions as “vandalism.”
Despite government assurances to roll out a decade-long investment plan intended to support the SDR’s objectives, the publication of this plan has been delayed multiple times. The government maintains that the Strategic Defence Review enjoys substantial backing, highlighted by what it calls the “largest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War,” totaling over £270 billion committed throughout the current parliamentary term. Nonetheless, Lord Robertson’s intervention strikes a more urgent tone about the nation’s preparedness. He asserts bluntly: “We cannot defend Britain with an ever-expanding welfare budget.”
Speaking in Salisbury, Robertson emphasized the precarious state of Britain’s defence readiness, stating, “We are underprepared. We are underinsured. We are under attack. We are not safe… Britain’s national security and safety is in peril.” He went on to highlight what he views as a “corrosive complacency” within political leadership, where serious discussions about official threats and risks receive only superficial attention, and even a promised national dialogue on defence has yet to begin.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has recently commented that the defence investment plan is currently being finalized. According to defence officials, the government aims to reach a target of spending 3% of GDP on defence by the conclusion of the next parliamentary term. In response to recent global events, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the re-election of former US President Donald Trump, the UK and other NATO nations are under increasing pressure to enhance their defence budgets. Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, Sir Richard Knighton, emphasized that this is likely “the most dangerous time of the last 30 years,” while rejecting claims that the UK was caught unprepared for the recent conflict in the Middle East, which commenced with a joint US-Israeli strike on Iran.
