Liverpool to mark 37th anniversary of Hillsborough

A minute of silence is scheduled to take place outside Liverpool Town Hall to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. This observance will occur on Wednesday, 15 April, precisely at 3:06 pm—the moment when the tragic football match was halted—honoring the memory of the 97 individuals who lost their lives.

Following the period of silence, a bell will ring 97 times as a solemn tribute to each victim. Afterwards, an instrumental rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will be played. The event will be held in Exchange Flags, located behind Liverpool Town Hall, and will be led by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Barbara Murray. She will be accompanied by the Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Liam Robinson.

Members of the public are warmly invited to join the gathering at Exchange Flags to pay their respects. Later on the same day, Liverpool Town Hall will open its doors from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm, allowing visitors to view a special Freedom of the City plaque. This plaque bears the engraved names of all 97 fans who died due to the disaster. Originally, the honour was granted to the 96 victims in September 2016, with Andrew Devine’s name added in May 2022 after he was officially recognized as the disaster’s 97th victim.

Additionally, flags will be flown at half-mast from civic buildings across Liverpool as a mark of respect. In the evening, the Town Hall will be illuminated in red to further symbolize the city’s remembrance of this tragic event
