Four arrested over murder of Scottish businessman in Kenya

Kenyan authorities have detained four men in connection with the killing of a Scottish businessman whose body was discovered in a sack near Nairobi. Campbell Scott, aged 58, was found deceased in Makongo Forest, approximately 60 miles from Nairobi, where he had been residing, on 24 February of last year.

The arrests followed an intelligence-driven, multi-agency operation conducted in Ukunda, a coastal town located roughly 16 miles south of Mombasa. This development came amidst a separate investigation into a violent robbery involving an American citizen in Nyali, near Mombasa.

Campbell Scott, originally from Dunfermline in Fife, held a senior director role at FICO, a credit scoring company. Prior to his disappearance, he traveled to Nairobi to attend a conference. Scott was reported missing after he failed to meet with colleagues for a scheduled presentation at the JW Marriott Hotel in the Westlands district of Nairobi. It is known that he had visited the Havana nightclub the night before his disappearance.

Kenyan police indicated that they suspect Scott was taken to a property located in the Pipeline district, a slum area about 9.3 miles from his hotel. Prosecutors believe that he was held there while attempts were made to access funds from his bank accounts. His body was subsequently found in Makongo Forest inside a pineapple sack, with his hands bound. The investigation initially focused on two individuals—a taxi driver and a nightclub waiter—who were reportedly among the last to see him alive. Two men were arrested in March last year, and one has since appeared in court facing murder charges. An appeal was later issued to locate three additional suspects.

In a statement, Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the recent arrests, linking the suspects—Bernard Mbusu, Isaac Kinoti Kobia, Evans Muthengi Mutaki, and Kelvin Mwangi Njoroge—not only to Scott’s murder but also to multiple violent robberies. The operation involved officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau Headquarters, SCCIO Nyali, and SCCIO Msambweni (Ukunda). Police conducted a search at the residence where the suspects were found, recovering stolen property such as an HP laptop, mobile phones, assorted foreign currencies, multiple credit cards, cheque books from various banks, and card reader machines
