After more than two decades, the cherished children’s series *Balamory* is making a much-anticipated return. Julie Wilson Nimmo, who plays Miss Hoolie, shared her excitement about revisiting the colourful island community that has captured hearts for years. “What’s the story in Balamory?” she said, reflecting on the familiar phrase that fans have greeted her with for over 20 years. Alongside her, Andrew Agnew, known for his role as PC Plum, expressed how honored he feels to be part of the revival, noting, “it’s such an honour to be back doing something that we love so much.”
The original show, a hit that combined friendship and problem-solving in a bright and vibrant setting, amassed a weekly UK audience of around two million at its peak and enjoyed international success in regions including Australia, Europe, and South Africa. Both Wilson Nimmo and Agnew hope the new series will attract a fresh generation, while also appealing to those who grew up with the show. Wilson Nimmo emphasized the unique appeal of the series, remarking, “Children are exposed to so much animation now, which is fantastic. But for children to turn the television on… for kids to sit and watch kids on the telly, not a lot of shows do that any more.”
The revival follows concerns raised in a recent BBC report about a decline in UK-produced children’s content, which has faced challenges such as reduced investment from broadcasters. The return of *Balamory* comes as a warmly welcomed boost to this landscape. The original cast members are reunited, including familiar faces like Penny Pocket and Edie McCredie, assuring fans that their beloved characters are back with the same spirit. Andrew Agnew reassures viewers, stating, “The island would not be the same without him [PC Plum]. He’s still bumbling, still a wee bit getting the wrong end of the stick quite a lot,” while also hinting at the introduction of exciting new characters like Dr Ollie and The Harbourmaster.
In addition to the returning residents, the new series welcomes fresh faces such as Ava Potts, the latest town inventor, stepping into the role once played by Miles Jupp’s character Archie, who is not returning. Alongside the familiarity of beloved songs, the show features new music with updated arrangements to bring a modern touch. Agnew noted, “There’s new songs as well and new takes on the songs because they’ve been revamped a wee bit to modernise them.” Produced by Lion Television Scotland, the revival has been commissioned for two series, each containing ten episodes, ensuring there is plenty more to enjoy in Balamory. The show debuted on CBeebies on Monday 20th April, with all episodes available for streaming on BBC iPlayer the same day
