A tragic accident occurred in La Gomera, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, when a bus carrying British tourists veered off a mountain road and plunged into a ravine. The crash happened near San Sebastián de La Gomera on the GM-2 road, a route known for its sharp bends and mountainous terrain. Emergency services received a call shortly after 13:16 local time reporting the bus had fallen approximately 10 metres from the road. The vehicle was transporting a group of 27 British tourists and one driver as they headed to the dock for a ferry to Tenerife.
The impact of the accident was severe, resulting in the death of a 77-year-old British man and injuries to the remaining 27 people on board. Most of those hurt were taken to Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe on the island’s east side, where the majority have since been discharged. However, three injured individuals remain hospitalized there for observation. In addition, three patients with more serious injuries, including two men aged 73 and 42, were transported by helicopter to medical facilities in Tenerife to receive specialized treatment.
Authorities managing emergency response in La Gomera have provided further details. Héctor Cabrera, head of emergency operations, mentioned that the tourists involved had been staying at a resort on the island prior to the accident. The local emergency teams deployed a significant response, including three helicopters and five ambulances, to handle the rescue and medical evacuation efforts. Images released by emergency services show the bus lying on its side close to a tight bend, highlighting the challenging road conditions.
Officials from both the UK and Spain have expressed their condolences and support. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed they are assisting the family of the deceased man. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper extended her sympathies through social media, emphasizing that the UK government remains in contact with local authorities and ready to support British nationals affected by the incident.
