After retiring, Steve Wainwright found an inventive way to keep himself engaged by crafting oversized models of common household objects. With a background in engineering and electrical work, the 62-year-old from Peterborough transformed everyday items into large-scale replicas, bringing a touch of whimsy and creativity to his daily life. Among his creations are a towering pencil, a giant clothes peg, an enormous audio cassette, and a three-pin plug far larger than the originals.
Wainwright explained that retirement brought its own challenges, commenting, “Once retired you can only cook and clean for so many hours.” His solution was to create these supersized items, each about ten times the size of the normal versions, though he admitted, “I’m not very good at maths.” Some of the models have been transformed into practical pieces, such as a massive tape measure that serves as a coffee table and a large plug converted into a cupboard, blending functionality with fun.
Operating from a custom-built garden workshop, Steve uses materials like wood, metal, and plastic to bring his projects to life. The process of making each object varies, taking anywhere from a few days up to two weeks, and costing around £2,500 in total so far. While some pieces have been sold locally, the main motivation behind his work remains personal enjoyment. His wife, Cat Thompson, appreciates the positive impact of his hobby, noting, “He puts his stuff mainly on the garage wall and we have a summer room where he keeps more of his stuff – but, it’s manageable. It mostly keeps him out of mischief.”
Beyond his home, Wainwright has showcased his oversized creations at charity events, where they received an unexpected response from blind visitors who enjoyed feeling the large items alongside their regular-sized counterparts. Among his favorites and the public’s is a five-foot-long HB 2 pencil. Those interested will be able to view these intriguing pieces in person at the Feel the Force Day comic book convention, set to take place at Peterborough Cathedral this September
