A 21-year-old man from Great Notley, Essex, has been accused of attempting to purchase a firearm to carry out a terrorist attack, according to testimony at the Old Bailey in London. Alfie Coleman, who works in a supermarket, was caught in an MI5 sting operation in a Morrisons car park. Over several months in 2023, Coleman communicated with individuals he believed to be fellow extremists; in reality, these contacts were MI5 agents who arranged the sale of a pistol and ammunition to him. Coleman was subsequently arrested by counter-terrorism officers when he went to pick up the weapon.
During the trial, prosecutor Nicholas De La Poer KC described Coleman as a far-right “militant accelerationist” committed to instigating a race war. Evidence presented to the jury revealed that from the age of 17, Coleman had immersed himself in extreme right-wing ideology and sought to arm himself with weapons, including knives openly sold online. Police found four knives in his bedroom after his arrest. Additionally, Coleman had downloaded several documents onto his phone, such as an edition of The Anarchist’s Cookbook—known for containing instructions on creating improvised explosive devices.
The court also heard that Coleman possessed a copy of a manifesto authored by Dylann Roof, the perpetrator of the 2015 South Carolina church shooting that left nine people dead. While Coleman denies the charge of preparing terrorist acts, he has admitted to downloading another illegal manual that details how to manufacture a submachine gun. The prosecution further revealed that in July 2021, when Coleman was 17, he emailed the far-right group Patriotic Alternative, describing himself as “a 17-year-old proud white European” eager to engage in activism.
Among other revelations was a note found on Coleman’s mobile phone, titled “Collapse,” which outlined a potential attack plan. This note specified the “Mayor of London House” and included the postcode for Mansion House, the residence of the Lord Mayor of London, along with instructions for making an explosive device. Prosecutors stated that although Coleman appeared normal at his job working for Tesco, internally he harbored intense hatred. He had compiled a list of “race traitors,” including a colleague married to a man of mixed Indian and Seychellois descent. The prosecution asserts that Coleman’s far-right beliefs motivated him to prepare for terrorist activity using the weapon he attempted to acquire from undercover officers
