Storm Dave: Power restored to majority of homes in Northern Ireland

Storm Dave swept through Northern Ireland on Saturday, resulting in power outages affecting around 2,000 homes due to strong winds. According to NIE’s powercheck, communities such as Newtownhamilton in County Armagh and Seaforde in County Down were among those most impacted. Engineers worked through the storm to restore electricity, and most households have since regained power.

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning starting from 14:00 BST on Saturday until 03:00 BST on Sunday, cautioning about potential damage, power cuts, and travel disruptions. Following these warnings, police advised motorists to steer clear of Dunluce Road in Bushmills after a fallen telegraph pole blocked the route. Several councils responded by closing public facilities, including forests, country parks, and nature reserves, urging the public to avoid these areas until conditions improved.

On the Republic of Ireland’s side, the storm left approximately 18,000 homes, farms, and businesses without electricity. ESB Networks reported that crews were actively attending to outages in safe conditions. Met Éireann’s yellow weather warning, which began at 13:00 local time, remained active until 02:00 on Sunday. Travel was also heavily disrupted at Dublin Airport, where 17 flights were canceled, and there were 53 go-arounds and 13 diversions due to strong winds gusting up to 44 knots. The airport advised passengers scheduled to fly late Saturday or Sunday morning to check with their airlines for the latest information.

The Maritime and Coast Guard agency added safety advisories cautioning people to keep away from cliff edges and avoid walking near cliff bases to prevent accidents caused by the severe weather conditions. The strong winds were expected to persist into early Sunday before gradually easing throughout the day. Meanwhile, some councils maintained closures of public parks and facilities as a precaution. Motorists were reminded about possible flooding and travel difficulties caused by the storm’s heavy rain and wind
