Final support call for businesses affected by Glasgow fire

A devastating fire that destroyed a historic building on Union Street in Glasgow has severely impacted numerous local businesses, which are now urged to apply for financial aid by Sunday night. The fire, originating in a vape shop on March 8, rapidly spread along the street, resulting in widespread damage and disruption.

The Fire Recovery Fund, managed by Glasgow City Council, has been established to provide this critical financial support. This fund is backed by a £10 million allocation from the Scottish government, aimed at helping the community recover from the destructive blaze. Over 70 businesses suffered the loss of their premises within the Forsyth House building, while many more experienced a decline in trade as the surrounding area remains cordoned off.

Applications for assistance are categorized into three levels based on the proximity to the fire and the severity of impact. Businesses directly housed in Forsyth House can receive up to £25,000 each. Those operating within the existing cordon but outside the building are eligible for £15,000, while companies within the broader initial cordon may claim £2,000. To date, the council has received more than 110 applications, with an additional 50 submissions underway.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses through this difficult period. Shona Robison, who was the finance and local government secretary when the fund was announced, highlighted that the mechanism will “enable businesses to access financial help quickly while ensuring support reaches those most in need.” She also noted that this initiative marks the beginning of efforts to rebuild and rejuvenate that part of Glasgow
