Scotland is preparing for challenging weather conditions as Storm Dave approaches, bringing strong winds and the possibility of snow over the Easter weekend. Authorities have placed three separate yellow wind warnings across the country, with the west Highlands, Argyll, and the Western Isles expected to experience snowfall. The storm is forecast to bring gusts reaching up to 80mph, particularly in areas like the Western Isles and Skye, with Orkney and Shetland also expected to be affected on Sunday.
The power company SSEN has highlighted the potential severity of the winds, emphasizing the likelihood of travel disruptions. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) has urged travelers to exercise caution and plan their journeys carefully, as both public transport and road networks are expected to face impacts. Police Scotland has advised people to postpone their travel where possible. Chief Superintendent Scott McCarren, head of road policing, warned: “Stopping distances can be at least double on wet roads compared to dry conditions, and spray can reduce driver visibility.” He urged HGV and bus drivers to be cautious and mentioned that police may request drivers to find a safe place to park if conditions are too hazardous. Additionally, transport operators such as CalMac ferries and Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd have already indicated that services could experience delays or disruptions due to the storm. Beyond wind, areas in central and northwest Scotland are also likely to see sleet and snow, with a yellow snow warning in effect from Saturday afternoon into early Sunday. The Met Office highlighted the risk of blizzard conditions in the hills of northwestern Scotland where snow accumulation and poor visibility are expected to create further challenges. By late Sunday, the weather is forecast to improve as the storm moves away
