A tragic shooting in south-east London has claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy named Eghosa Ogbebor. The incident occurred on Lord Warwick Street in Woolwich at approximately 15:40 BST on Thursday. Emergency services arrived promptly and paramedics treated the boy at the scene, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the location. Authorities have informed the victim’s family about the incident.

In connection with the shooting, three individuals have been detained. These include two teenagers aged 14 and 16, as well as an 18-year-old man, all arrested on suspicion of murder. The police have called on the public to provide any information that could assist with the investigation, particularly urging anyone with CCTV or dashcam recordings from the area to come forward.

Witnesses near the scene described a chaotic aftermath. Patrons at The Greyhound pub nearby reportedly rushed indoors in panic upon hearing gunfire. A pub employee, Sofia Pereira, recounted hearing a loud noise caused by a teenager jumping over trash bins, with several customers reacting in fear due to the presence of what she described as a machete. Pereira said, “Everyone got scared because they heard shooting and they could see one of the guys had a machete, or something like that. So everyone just ran inside, said ‘lock, lock all the doors and everything’, because obviously we didn’t know what was going on.”

The community remains shaken by the event. An 18-year-old local resident described the shooting as “shocking” and said it felt surreal walking around the neighborhood after the incident. Meanwhile, police cordoned off the area on Friday with a visible increase in officers present, and forensic teams conducted searches along the street. Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card extended condolences to the family and acknowledged the community’s concerns, stating, “We have already made three arrests and our investigation continues at pace. An increased police presence remains in the area.”

The London Mayor expressed his sympathies, emphasizing the severity of the situation and the ongoing police efforts. He stated, “My thoughts are with the family, friends and wider community in Woolwich following the appalling fatal shooting of 14-year-old boy. There is absolutely no place for this heart-breaking violence. I remain in close contact with the Met who have been working around the clock – arrests have already been made and an investigation is under way. Residents will see an increase in police in the local area.
