Jasmine Beverley, mother to a stillborn son, Sunny Beverley-Conlin, has spoken out following a distressing revelation involving the funeral director responsible for her son’s funeral. Nearly two years after the service, Sunny’s remains were discovered at the undertaker’s premises, a shocking discovery that has brought renewed attention to the misconduct of Robert Bush, who operated Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull. Beverley has vowed that Bush “will pay for what he’s done.”
Sunny passed away in May 2022, less than 24 weeks into the pregnancy, which prevented Bush from facing the most serious charges related to the case. Nevertheless, Bush, aged 48, admitted to 30 counts of preventing lawful and decent burials along with one count of theft from a dozen charities during a hearing at Hull Crown Court. The investigation revealed that Bush had returned incorrect ashes to several grieving families, while numerous bodies remained neglected on his site for extended periods.
The emotional toll on Beverley and her husband Ben Conlin has been profound. They became suspicious when they noticed that Sunny’s ashes were returned in the very same box the baby was originally placed in for the funeral, with a distinctive nick in the wood confirming it was not a replacement container. Beverley recounted to BBC Newsnight her initial doubts and the subsequent distress when police informed them in 2024, while she was pregnant again, that Sunny’s remains had been found at the funeral home. “It was very distressing, I was losing sleep and just feeling so powerless,” she said, describing how the situation haunted her final months of pregnancy.
This case is part of a wider scandal following a police investigation launched in March 2024, which uncovered 35 bodies and the ashes of at least 163 people at the Hessle Road site. In October 2025, Bush admitted to deceiving other families by falsely representing ashes as those of their unborn babies. Despite the sorrow caused, Beverley remains determined to honor her son’s memory positively. “I was able to make his life mean something just by talking about him, by hopefully helping other mothers,” she explained. Robert Bush is set to be sentenced on 27 July on 67 charges, including fraud by false representation and running a fraudulent business related to funeral plans
