Scott Mills confirms he was investigated by police in first statement since sacking

Mills addressed the situation in a statement where he noted that his removal from the BBC led to “the publication of rumour and speculation.” It was revealed that the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into Mills in 2016 concerning serious sexual offence allegations involving a teenage boy under the age of 16. This investigation concluded in 2019 after the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was insufficient evidence to press charges.

In his comments, Mills affirmed that he fully cooperated with the authorities during the inquiry and expressed his gratitude to those who have supported him through the difficult period, including listeners and former colleagues. The allegations, first reported by the Mirror, allegedly date back to between 1997 and 2000, a time when Mills would have been in his mid-20s.

The BBC confirmed on Wednesday that it was aware of the police investigation as early as 2017. However, the broadcaster stated that Mills was dismissed only after “new information” about his conduct emerged recently. The BBC also indicated it is conducting a thorough review to better understand what was known internally at different stages related to the case. Mills himself did not comment on the specifics of the allegations or the reasons behind his sacking in his statement
