Decades after his initial visit to Belfast as an aspiring bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger has returned to the city to receive a special recognition. Ulster University (UU) welcomed the Hollywood icon and former politician on Monday with an honorary degree in acknowledgement of his achievements in public service, environmental activism, and the arts. This event marked a significant homecoming for Schwarzenegger, celebrating the lasting connection he has with Belfast.
Reflecting on his first trip to Belfast in 1966, Schwarzenegger described it as a pivotal experience. At that time, he was unable to speak English well and was overwhelmed when asked to speak publicly at a bodybuilding event. “What happened that day in Belfast was so important to me because every single time afterwards when I won a competition I went to the microphone,” he recounted, explaining how that initial moment of public speaking helped him gain confidence. “Each time I said more and more and more, and eventually they couldn’t shut me up, I love talking so much in public.”
The star, best known for his role in the Terminator films, was invited back to UU’s Belfast campus where he met with students and athletes. His surprise visit was partly arranged after a playful video call with university officials, during which he was “tricked” into agreeing to deliver a speech upon being asked if he still believed in free speech. Schwarzenegger laughed, “So I was tricked, I couldn’t get out of it anymore.” The warm reception included a red carpet welcome, highlighting the significance of his return to the city.
Ulster University’s vice-chancellor, Professor Paul Bartholemew, praised Schwarzenegger’s broad influence across sports, film, and public life. He described the honorary doctorate as the highest accolade the university offers to individuals who have made a remarkable impact, noting Schwarzenegger’s dedication to environmental causes and philanthropy. The actor’s early ties to Northern Ireland date back to the mid-1960s when, at 19, he competed in a Mr Universe contest and formed connections with influential figures in the local bodybuilding scene, a period that helped launch his storied career spanning bodybuilding championships, Hollywood stardom, and public office
