'Housebound' Goring-by-Sea benefit cheat caught ziplining in Mexico

A woman from West Sussex who fraudulently claimed over £23,000 in benefits by asserting she was too unwell to leave her home was discovered enjoying activities such as surfing and ziplining during a trip to Mexico. Catherine Wieland, aged 33, had maintained she suffered from severe anxiety that confined her indoors. Despite these claims, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) uncovered video evidence of her surfing in Cancun as well as multiple visits to Thorpe Park.

Wieland, who resides in Goring-by-Sea, received tens of thousands of pounds through Personal Independence Payments (PIP) over a period of more than two years. Instead of using the funds for their intended purpose, she spent the money on luxury treatments including manicures, tanning sessions, and private dental care on Harley Street. Over that timeframe, she also made numerous beauty appointments, frequently visited pubs, clubs, and restaurants, and conducted transactions in foreign currencies, all contradictory to her claims of being unable to cook or wash herself.

When confronted by investigators armed with her bank statements, Wieland responded, “I didn’t realise you’re not allowed to leave your house.” After her extravagant holiday to Mexico, she even submitted a review stating that her medical condition had worsened. She later admitted guilt for failing to report changes in her circumstances and was ordered to repay the £23,662 she had fraudulently obtained from the system between 2021 and 2024.

Andrew Western, a minister at the DWP, condemned Wieland’s actions, saying, “This is an insult to every hardworking taxpayer and to people who genuinely depend on PIP.” He added, “Wieland lied repeatedly, milked the system for every penny she could get and then had the nerve to claim her condition was worsening while she was ziplining and surfing in Mexico.” Wieland received a 28-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months, according to the department’s announcement on Thursday
