Paul C Brunson, a fellow coach on the UK edition of Married At First Sight, paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend and colleague Mel Schilling, describing her as “fearless,” “tough,” and “deeply loved.” Schilling, who had appeared on the reality dating series in both Australia and the UK, passed away this week, two years after her cancer diagnosis.
Before the Australian version of the show aired in the UK on Tuesday, E4 released a statement confirming that Mel and her family wished for the programme to continue broadcasting in her memory. Brunson, who worked alongside Schilling as a relationship expert for five years, shared photos of the pair on social media and praised her “extraordinary strength.” Despite undergoing chemotherapy and frequently traveling between Australia and the UK to film, Schilling never missed an episode or showed signs of giving up.
“She showed up fully every single time,” Brunson said. “Always with a smile I never once heard her complain. That wasn’t just professionalism. That was extraordinary strength.” Beyond her resilience, he emphasized Schilling’s courage and outspokenness, particularly in her defense of women and the LGBTQ+ community. He fondly recalled how her demeanor softened when speaking about her family, including her daughter Maddie and her husband Gareth.
Brunson concluded his tribute by highlighting how Schilling embodied living according to one’s values and demonstrated remarkable strength amid adversity. “She was present. She was powerful. She was full of heart,” he said, underlining how deeply she would be missed.
