Two men arrested over Jewish charity ambulance arson attacks

Authorities have arrested two men suspected of carrying out arson with the intent to endanger lives after four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity were deliberately set on fire in north London. The incident took place in Golders Green during the early hours of Monday, prompting an investigation led by the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit.

A 47-year-old man was apprehended in north-west London, while a second individual, aged 45, was arrested in central London on Wednesday morning. Commander Helen Flanagan, who oversees counter-terror policing in London, called the arrests a significant development. However, she noted that CCTV footage indicates the involvement of at least three people in the attack.

Commander Flanagan emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, acknowledging the community’s concerns: “We fully recognise the local community will still be concerned and our investigation very much remains active and we will continue to work to identify and seek to arrest all of those who may have been involved.” Police officers are currently conducting searches at the two suspects’ residences as part of their inquiries.

In response to the incident, Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams announced enhanced security measures, which include deploying officers to safeguard specific sites and increasing visible patrols by armed police. He clarified that these steps are precautionary and not prompted by any particular threat. Meanwhile, four replacement ambulances supplied by the government arrived at Hatzola on Tuesday to restore the essential services disrupted by the attack
