Iranian man who tried to enter nuclear base released

An Iranian national, aged 34, who was allegedly attempting to gain access to the Faslane naval base, has been released while investigations continue. He did not make an appearance in court following his arrest at HM Naval Base Clyde, near Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute, around 5 pm on Thursday. Despite his release, the legal proceedings against him remain active, according to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS).

Alongside him, a 31-year-old Romanian woman who was also taken into custody has been freed without any charges filed. This decision followed a review of the admissible evidence available at the time. The Crown Office indicated that if new evidence emerges in the future, they are prepared to revive the case against her.

Faslane naval base, situated on the Gare Loch some 25 miles northwest of Glasgow, serves as the station for the Royal Navy’s entire fleet of nuclear submarines. Notably, it houses the UK’s four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines that are equipped with Trident nuclear weapons, highlighting the strategic importance of the site.
