In north London, a deliberate fire targeting four ambulances belonging to a Jewish community emergency service is currently being investigated as an antisemitic hate crime, according to the Metropolitan Police. The incident occurred in Golders Green, an area known for its significant Jewish population, when the vehicles were discovered ablaze in the early hours of Monday.
The London Fire Brigade responded to the scene on Highfield Road at approximately 01:40 GMT, where they found four Hatzolah ambulances engulfed in flames. The subsequent blaze led to multiple cylinder explosions within the ambulances, shattering windows in a nearby block of flats. Firefighters deployed six engines and around 40 personnel to manage the situation, successfully bringing the fire under control by 03:06 GMT. Precautions included evacuating several residences in the vicinity and maintaining road closures.
Superintendent Sarah Jackson, overseeing the local police operation, revealed that investigations are ongoing, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage and online videos. She stated, “We believe we are looking for three suspects at this early stage.” No arrests have been made to date, though the police are actively engaging with faith leaders and increasing patrols in the area to reassure the community. Residents affected by the evacuation were accommodated in a local shelter, with approximately 30 people relocating there temporarily.
Local voices expressed their distress following the attack. Ushi Gross described hearing an explosion shortly after 01:30 GMT and seeing the ambulances on fire, saying, “We’ve all been woken up… by arsonists targeting the ambulances in our community.” Councillor Shimon Ryde, speaking from the shelter, pointed out the close proximity of the Hatzolah ambulance centre to a synagogue and remarked, “It’s very shocking, it’s not unexpected.
