Greg James completes Comic Relief cycle challenge

BBC Radio 1’s Greg James has successfully completed a demanding Comic Relief challenge, raising over £4 million for charity. The breakfast show host embarked on an ambitious 1,000km (630-mile) tandem cycling journey that took him across England, Wales, and Scotland, starting from Weymouth, Dorset, last Friday. The ride concluded at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, where he was greeted by enthusiastic crowds.

Throughout the trek, Greg was joined on the tandem bike by various special guests. Comedian Joe Lycett, fellow Radio 1 presenter Jamie Laing, and, notably, The Prince of Wales all took turns riding the second saddle. Greg described the experience as both emotional and physically gruelling, even admitting he would “never cycle again” after the intense week of effort. Despite the hardships, his arrival at the finish line was marked by tears of joy as he reflected on the journey.

The challenge received overwhelming support from listeners and fans, who sent voice notes and cheered him along roadside stops. Numerous celebrities also contributed messages of encouragement, including F1 driver Lando Norris, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, comedian Bob Mortimer, singer Nick Jonas, and even Elmo. One of the highlights of the ride was a special fly-past by the Red Arrows during the day Greg cycled with Prince William. In an entertaining moment, Jamie Laing fulfilled a promise by donning lingerie for part of day seven, a forfeit tied to a fundraising milestone.

This year’s total fundraising amount reached £4,041,910, setting a new record for Radio 1’s annual charity effort. This was Greg James’ third Comic Relief challenge in a decade. Previously, he had completed five triathlons over five days and climbed three notable mountains: Scafell Pike, Snowdon, and Ben Nevis. On the morning of the final day, Greg’s mother shared that his parents were “beyond proud” of his incredible achievement
