A significant restoration effort has been secured for a historic bridge spanning the River Teviot in the Scottish Borders, with funding of £250,000 awarded to support the project. This notable structure, known as the Kalemouth Suspension Bridge, dates back nearly two centuries and was closed to vehicular traffic in August 2020 due to considerable deterioration found in its timber deck.
The Scottish Borders Council successfully obtained this financial backing from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The restoration plan includes replacing the timber components and deck bracing, alongside refurbishing the ironwork and masonry. The goal is to preserve the bridge as a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, maintaining its role in local connectivity.
Councillor John Greenwell described the new funding as “an exciting step” towards reviving the bridge. He emphasized that this support enables the project team to proceed with detailed planning and secure additional finances required to ensure the structure’s longevity and safety for future generations.
Constructed around 1835 by Capt Samuel Brown—who also designed the Union Chain Bridge linking Scotland and England—the Kalemouth Suspension Bridge carries an unclassified road that formerly allowed light vehicles (under three tonnes) to pass between the A698 and properties in Ormiston Mains. Structural assessments revealed the Category A-listed bridge could no longer bear the weight of vehicles safely. Caroline Clark, director for Scotland at the National Lottery Heritage Fund, highlighted the bridge’s engineering significance, stating: “Kalemouth Suspension Bridge is a magnificent piece of engineering and serves both as an important crossing for walkers and cyclists, and as a landmark and monument to local heritage.” She further added that the investment would enable essential restoration work and the installation of interpretation panels to tell the bridge’s story
