A man from Derbyshire experienced a startling incident when his skin unexpectedly turned blue, prompting a rushed trip to the hospital. Tommy Lynch, aged 42, had woken up after a long sleep with his skin resembling that of the blue characters from the film *Avatar*. The unusual colour turned out to be caused not by any medical condition, but by dye from newly gifted navy-coloured bed sheets.
Concerned by his appearance, a friend urged Lynch to seek immediate medical attention. At Queen’s Hospital in Burton, Staffordshire, emergency staff reacted quickly; they placed him on oxygen and examined him thoroughly. The medical team initially treated the situation as a serious health emergency until one of the medics wiped Lynch’s arm with a swab, which also turned blue. It was at that moment everyone realized the blue tint was due to the bed sheet dye rubbing off, likely worsened by Lynch overheating in bed.
Reflecting on the experience, Lynch said, “I was mortified but they said I’d given them a good laugh. They don’t usually have funny stories in A&E.” He recalled how the hospital receptionists stared at him in surprise, and how about ten doctors surrounded him during the assessment. After discovering the dye was the cause, the hospital staff were “absolutely fantastic,” despite the embarrassing mix-up.
The £40 bedding set had been a gift meant to keep Lynch warm in his barn property in Castle Gresley. It took several days of bathing for the blue colour to fade from his skin, with the bathwater itself turning blue during the process. Lynch advised others to always wash new sheets before using them, joking, “Unless you want to jump the queue at A&E.” After laundering the sheets, he said, “I haven’t gone blue since.”
