Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales since September 2025, has faced renewed scrutiny over comments he made during his previous career as a hypnotherapist. In a 2013 session, Polanski offered hypnosis to a newspaper reporter with the claim that it could increase her breast size. Since entering politics, he has distanced himself from this claim and asserted that he was misrepresented in the original article.
Polanski has stated that he apologised to the BBC the day after the article’s publication, but BBC News has found no evidence to support that assertion. Instead, what is documented is a BBC Radio Humberside interview six days later, during which Polanski did not apologise but rather appeared to uphold the claim. He told presenter Peter Levy that “the evidence is growing” to support the idea that hypnosis might increase breast size, describing the process as an “experiment” requiring further research.
The interview significantly contrasts with Polanski’s subsequent statements as Green Party leader. For example, in September last year during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, he insisted, “I was misrepresented, I apologised a day later.” On the Pod Save the UK podcast, he maintained said, “I went out on BBC Radio the next day, so not twelve years later when I became a politician, but literally the next day to go ‘this article doesn’t represent me’.” Additionally, as deputy leader, he told LBC radio he “never believed that” hypnosis could enlarge breasts and apologised for the original interview, recognising its potential to offend.
A spokesperson for the Green Party commented on the matter, stating, “Zack has repeatedly apologised for an interview he did with the Sun more than a decade ago. Now, Zack is focussed on the issues that really matter to people: bringing down bills, protecting the NHS and rebuilding our public services.” The controversy highlights the contrast between Polanski’s earlier professional claims and his current political position
