UK weather: Snow forecast for some as cold air returns this week

After enjoying a brief period of spring-like warmth in the UK, temperatures are expected to fall back into single digits this week, accompanied by the possibility of snow in some regions. While March usually brings warmer and sunnier days, the air over the far northern Atlantic remains chilly. A series of weather fronts will gradually usher this colder air from the northwest across the country, causing daytime temperatures to drop. By Friday, highs may struggle to rise above ten degrees Celsius, signaling that winter is still loosening its grip and that mild, sunny spring days remain scarce.

This shift in weather patterns is linked to an intensifying jet stream, which is steering successive fronts loaded with increasingly wet conditions toward the UK. Toward the week’s end, wintry showers could occur. Additionally, strong winds blowing in from the Atlantic are expected to clear away the fog and mist that have recently been widespread in many areas. Although these breezes may prevent widespread overnight frosts, certain locations favored by clear skies between these weather systems may still experience temperatures dropping to freezing.

Snowfall is likely to accompany the stronger winds, especially across elevated terrain in northern parts of the UK, with some hills and mountains possibly seeing accumulations. Elsewhere, fast-moving hail showers may occur and brief flurries of wet snow are possible even in southern regions. Despite this, any snow that falls outside northern high ground is unlikely to settle.

Looking ahead to the weekend, a deep low-pressure system is forecast to move across the country, bringing gale-force winds, particularly across Scotland. Wind gusts across much of the UK could reach between 40 and 50 mph, with exposed northwest areas potentially experiencing gusts over 60 mph. The chill in the air will prompt many to dig out heavy coats, hats, and gloves. However, there will be temporary breaks between weather systems, offering bright sunshine and crisp conditions. Beyond the weekend, forecasts vary; some models indicate a return to high pressure and drier weather, while others suggest continued unsettled and cold conditions. Given the time of year, alternating spells of mild and colder weather are to be expected in the weeks ahead
