Four men detained in connection with a counter-terrorism investigation linked to Iran have been granted extended time for questioning until 13 March. These individuals, comprised of one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian nationals, were arrested on Friday on suspicion of aiding a foreign intelligence service.
The Metropolitan Police indicated that the inquiry centers around alleged surveillance targeting places and individuals associated with London’s Jewish community. On Saturday, authorities confirmed they had obtained extended detention warrants under the National Security Act for the four suspects, who range in age from 22 to 55 and were arrested in different locations including Barnet, Watford, and Harrow.
In addition to these arrests, six other men aged between 20 and 49 have been released on bail while the investigation continues. These six were apprehended at the same site in Harrow on suspicion of assisting an offender, with one also facing allegations of assaulting a police officer.
Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter Terrorism Policing London, described the detentions as part of a “long-running investigation” aimed at disrupting harmful activities suspected by the authorities. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the UK’s police and security services as “world leading,” emphasizing their readiness to respond to any threats against the country. The Community Security Trust, a charity focused on safeguarding the Jewish community in Britain, expressed gratitude to law enforcement and reassured that security remains robust throughout the community. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned Iran’s actions broadly, stating that “Even in the United Kingdom, the Iranian regime poses a direct threat to dissidents and to the Jewish community.
