Ian Huntley, the Soham murderer, is reportedly nearing death after being removed from life support following a violent assault inside prison, according to information from the BBC. The 52-year-old has been hospitalized since February 26, when he was attacked with a homemade weapon at HMP Frankland in County Durham, a high-security facility known for housing some of the most dangerous offenders.
Sources within the prison revealed that Huntley was discovered lying in a pool of blood after the attack, having sustained severe head trauma. The BBC has also indicated that Anthony Russell, a 43-year-old convicted triple killer, is suspected of carrying out the assault. Life support was switched off on Friday, marking a critical point in Huntley’s condition. This prison is notorious for its high levels of violence and is home to inmates convicted of murder and rape.
Huntley was convicted for the murders of two 10-year-old schoolgirls, Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells, in 2002. The girls, who had been attending a family barbecue in Soham, Cambridgeshire, were believed to have been lured from their path to buy sweets back to Huntley’s home, where he killed them. The images of the girls, captured just hours before they went missing and wearing matching Manchester United football shirts, became etched in public memory during the nationwide search that followed their disappearance.
It is worth noting that this is not Huntley’s first prison attack. In 2010, he was seriously injured when slashed across the throat, requiring 21 stitches. Additionally, in 2005, while at HMP Wakefield, he was doused with boiling water by another convicted murderer. Huntley was sentenced to at least 40 years for the double murders. His girlfriend at the time, Maxine Carr, was jailed in 2003 for providing him with a false alibi but has since been released.
