Households in Northern Ireland are facing significant challenges due to a sharp rise in home heating oil prices. Many residents have reported being severely impacted, with some pensioners devoting nearly their entire monthly income just to cover one oil refill. Over the course of a single week, prices for 500 litres of heating oil surged by 45%, creating financial strain for many families reliant on this primary source of heat.

One such individual, Pauline Buller from Aghalee in County Antrim, shared her experience of paying £786 for 800 litres of oil, marking an increase of more than £300 in only a few days. She expressed the difficulty of managing these costs on a fixed pension, saying, “I’m a pensioner, we get paid every four weeks – my oil fill has just taken three and a half weeks of my four weeks.” Pauline highlighted the precarious situation many single pensioners face, questioning how they could afford both fuel and food on limited incomes. With no viable alternatives to heating oil in her area, she illustrated the tough choices many must now make.

In Portadown, Gareth Barker also recently ordered 400 litres of heating oil amid worries about developments in the Middle East. He paid £286 when he placed the order, only to find the price had jumped to £526 shortly afterward.
