Cillian Murphy has expressed deep appreciation for the enduring enthusiasm surrounding Peaky Blinders as the film adaptation, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, premieres. Returning to his iconic role as Tommy Shelby, Murphy marks 13 years since first portraying the Birmingham gangster in the beloved BBC series. Reflecting on the show’s rise, he noted that it initially launched without much promotion but gradually grew into a major phenomenon thanks to the dedication of its fan base.
Murphy described the affection from fans as “wonderfully humbling,” emphasizing how invested they have become in the characters over time. He considers the movie as a form of gratitude and acknowledgment of the audience’s loyalty. The film arrives four years after the series concluded with its sixth season, during which time Murphy has gained significant acclaim for his role in Oppenheimer, earning an Oscar, a Bafta, and a Golden Globe.
Joining Murphy in the film are new cast members including Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan as Tommy Shelby’s son Duke, along with Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight praised the ensemble, remarking, “I think we have got the cream,” and highlighted how the project attracts top talent across acting and music. Set during World War Two in 1940, the film explores Tommy Shelby’s character at a point where he has withdrawn from society and is haunted by his past. Murphy explained that Tommy lives in isolation, wrestling with the consequences of his actions, and that writing a book serves as a therapeutic outlet before the world of Peaky Blinders and his son draw him back into the fray. The film enjoyed a limited theatrical run before its Netflix release on 20 March, with the intention of providing fans an opportunity to experience the story together on the big screen rather than solely through digital means
