Scottish Labour MP Joani Reid is currently facing an internal party investigation following the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of espionage involving China. Taylor, a businessman and former Labour adviser, is one of three individuals accused of aiding a foreign intelligence agency. Reid, representing East Kilbride and Strathaven, has stated that she was not involved in her husband’s business dealings and has never had reason to suspect any illegal activity on his part.
The arrests took place in different locations: Taylor was detained in London, while the other two men, Matthew Aplin, an ex-Labour press officer, and Steve Jones, a former Welsh government special adviser, were apprehended in Wales. All three have since been released on bail. Counter-terrorism police conducted searches not only at the sites of arrest but also at other properties in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar described the situation as “deeply concerning” and confirmed that Reid had been referred to the party’s governance and legal unit, with decisions expected later on.
Sarwar emphasized the gravity of the investigation, calling it a serious matter of national security that requires thorough police inquiry. While discussing the possibility of Reid being suspended or stepping aside from her role on the Westminster home affairs committee during the investigation, he noted these considerations were under review. Sarwar also dismissed any suggestions of improper donations to the Scottish Labour Party linked to the case and stated he only had limited acquaintance with Taylor through a recent event involving Taylor’s PR company.
In response to the allegations and her husband’s arrest, Reid insisted that neither she nor her family are part of the investigation and urged the media not to treat them as such. She added she had never engaged with Chinese businesses, diplomats, or government officials in her capacity as an MP, nor acted on behalf of Chinese interests. Reid identified herself as a social democrat supportive of freedom of expression, trade unions, and democratic elections, distancing herself from any admiration for the Chinese Communist Party. Notably, Taylor has a background as a Labour adviser in Wales and had once run for police and crime commissioner in North Wales. Financial records show that Reid’s consultancy firm, Reid Strategy Limited, received more than £23,000 in interest-free loans from two companies directed by Taylor, though there is no suggestion of wrongdoing regarding these transactions.
Joani Reid originates from Glasgow but spent much of her professional life in London, notably working as head of policy for the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. Inspired by her grandfather, the renowned trade unionist Jimmy Reid, she embarked on a political path, becoming a Labour councillor in Lewisham in 2014. After relocating to East Kilbride in 2022, she was elected to Parliament in 2024. Reid serves on the Commons home affairs committee and has been an outspoken advocate for a Scottish grooming gangs inquiry. Her grandfather Jimmy Reid was known for leading a successful campaign to save the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1971 and later transitioned into journalism and broadcasting.
