Harry Styles has revealed that the passing of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne led him to re-evaluate his life. Speaking about the inspiration behind his forthcoming fourth album, *Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally*, Styles reflected on the profound effect that losing his friend had on him.
Liam Payne tragically died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after a fatal fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina. The two musicians, who first rose to fame as members of the boy band One Direction, shared a close bond from their early career days. Styles described Payne as someone possessing “the kindest heart who just wanted to be great,” emphasizing the deep impact his loss had on his perspective. “It was a really important moment for me, in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself: ‘OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?'” Styles explained. He added, “I think the greatest way you can honour your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest.”
The five-piece band, which also included Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, came together on the TV talent show *The X Factor* in 2010 and enjoyed massive global success before going on indefinite hiatus in 2016. Following Payne’s death, the band reunited for his funeral to pay their respects. Since the group’s break, each member has pursued solo careers, with Styles notably establishing his own identity as a solo artist starting in 2017.
Despite his public success, Styles admitted he still finds it difficult to discuss Payne’s death openly. He described Payne as a “super special person” and spoke about the complexities of grieving in the public eye, mentioning the challenge of feeling that others “kind of own part of your grief” and the pressure to express one’s emotions in a way that meets external expectations. Earlier this year, Styles ended a nearly four-year hiatus from releasing new music with the single “Aperture,” leading the way into his new album. Prior to this, he had taken time off following the conclusion of his *Love On Tour* performances in summer 2023, a pause well-earned after more than a decade of continuous touring and music production both as part of One Direction and as a solo artist.
In discussing his artistic inspirations, Styles shared that some of his favorite moments in music are those where an artist reveals their true self. “I think the thing that makes someone like an artist, is letting them watch you be an ordinary person,” he said. He noted that the appeal lies not in mystique but in authenticity, explaining, “We’re all ordinary people and there’s some people who let other people watch you be an ordinary person. And I think that is kind of the key in a lot of ways – for me anyway.
