Lancaster teenager sells 'banger' Nissan Micra to Banksy show

A 17-year-old girl named Matilda recently sold her Nissan Micra, which was around 25 years old and missing some parts, for £400. The buyer was an exhibition organizer planning to use the car to replicate one of Banksy’s original artworks featuring a rhinoceros climbing onto a Micra. Matilda, from Lancaster, initially found the inquiry so unusual that she suspected it might be a joke.

Matilda was cautious at first and requested an upfront payment to confirm the legitimacy of the offer. Once the authenticity was established, she expressed her excitement about being connected with such a renowned name, stating, “What a name to be involved with – Banksy.” The exhibition in question is set to open at Depot Mayfield in Manchester over the coming weekend and will continue until July.

The Nissan Micra had a sentimental origin, as it was a gift from Matilda’s brother to help her learn to drive. However, since the car had become more of a classic collectible rather than an everyday vehicle, the family decided to sell it due to an excess of cars in their collection. Frustrated by previous uninterested buyers, Matilda crafted a straightforward online advertisement warning potential buyers that the car was far from perfect. She wrote, “Look, we’re not friends. You’re not coming here to have a day out. You’re buying a car, it’s not in excellent condition whatsoever.”

Matilda was amazed to learn her car would be used to recreate the famous Banksy artwork, which had originally appeared on a street in Charlton two years ago. She found it amusing that the buyers wanted the car to be non-functional, saying, “Most people when you sell a car they want it running well; they want the opposite they want the fuel tank taken off it and they don’t want it running at all.” As she has already witnessed the early stages of the exhibition setup, Matilda is eagerly looking forward to seeing the fully completed installation, including the painted rhinoceros on her former car. She described the experience as “really exciting and an amazing thing to be part of.”

John Carrigan of Events Cartel, the promoters behind the exhibition, explained how they found Matilda’s car shortly before finalizing their plans. He said, “We decided very late on into our planning and literally a couple of weeks ago that if we could find a Nissan Micra of that right year and the right colour we could recreate the rhino.” He continued, “We literally got on the internet and came across this one. It was just the perfect sort of location, perfect car, and what turns out to be a lovely story behind it with the family.” Events Cartel is organizing the UK debut of the international exhibition titled *The Mystery of Banksy – A Genius Mind*, which is described as a tribute since the works are not officially authorized by Banksy due to his anonymity. The rhino piece is among several works the elusive artist revealed in London during the summer of 2024
