France’s first social housing project designed specifically for LGBTQIA+ seniors has recently opened in Lyon, marking a significant step towards fostering safety, solidarity, and love within an often marginalized community. This new residence, known as La Maison de la Diversité, offers not only a place to live but also a renewed sense of belonging for its inhabitants. For many residents, moving in represents more than shelter; it is a fresh start filled with hope and mutual support.
Although the building is still being furnished and the garden is in its early stages, vibrant colors and symbols of LGBTQIA+ pride fill the space, from rainbow doormats to playful posters. The atmosphere reflects a spirit of reclamation, as residents embrace words and identities that were once used to belittle them. The community is alive with activity on move-in day, representing a vital and welcoming environment that counters the isolation many have experienced.
La Maison de la Diversité is the first co-living initiative by Les Audacieuses & Les Audacieux, an organization dedicated to combating isolation and encouraging social inclusion within the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies. Inspired by a similar project in Berlin, this French residence took several years to materialize and now features 16 apartments, mostly for people over 55, with additional spaces for younger residents and guests. This project pioneers a vital approach to addressing the specific needs of aging LGBTQIA+ individuals in France.
Loneliness and mental health challenges are widespread among older adults, but these issues are significantly intensified in the LGBTQIA+ population. Statistics reveal that a higher percentage of LGBTQIA+ seniors live alone compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers, with suicide rates disproportionately elevated. Many residents, like Alice and Gisèle, have faced long histories of exclusion, discrimination, and isolation.
